In the meantime, here’s a summary of the conversation…

The conversation starts off with Brad asking Shawn if he’s always wanted to be an agent. Shawn says that he didn’t. In fact, he had dreams of being a lawyer as a kid!

After realizing school wasn’t the route for him, he spent some time in the Marine Corps before learning about real estate from a friend. Shawn bought his house from his friend who happened to be an agent and found the job fascinating. He decided to take the leap and used leads on Zillow to close on a few properties pretty quickly.

He mentions that he loved showing houses and helping people decide which was the best fit for them.

Next, Brad asks what has changed from the time Shawn started to now. Shawn says that he didn’t really understand contracts, resources for boosting real estate, etc. in the beginning. While he was learning the ropes of real estate, he focused most of his time and attention on showing as many houses as he could.

He credits cold-calling as a huge part of his success, noting that while not every person he called was receptive, many were and as a result, his phone would be ringing all day with calls back.

Brad asks if Shawn has received any advice that has really stuck with him throughout his career. Shawn explains that he was told the importance of karma. He feels that the way he treats other agents will come back in the form of karma, so he tries to always do the right thing and offer kindness and compassion with every deal.

Taylor then asks if Shawn has any advice for a new agent, to which he says he would advise new agents to spend the first two weeks shadowing a mentor to learn the ropes. He mentions that he shadowed agents during showings, meetings with lenders, and calls.

Brad brings up the pandemic, asking if Shawn has noticed any impact on his business as a result. Shawn says that he was gaining a lot of momentum and showing a lot of houses when suddenly shutdowns made showing properties impossible.

He says that he tried to make the experience a positive one, so he focused on reaching out to past clients and creating goals for when everything opened back up. Because of this approach, he met his goals and doubled his sales in August!

On the topic of goals, Brad asks if Shawn has any big goals for the future. Shawn mentions that he wants to get his broker’s license and create a team of 3-4 agents with a similar mindset and work ethic as him.

Lastly, Taylor asks the signature question: Is a hotdog a sandwich?

Shawn says that he doesn’t think so, since a hamburger is the sandwich version of a hotdog and that a hotdog is closer to a taco!
