WindowStill Spotlight: Kendra Barriger
This week under the WindowStill Spotlight, we have Kendra Barriger!
Kendra is a real estate photographer based in Holly, MI. Here’s what she had to say…
What is your role at WindowStill? What does a typical day of work look like for you?
I’m a real estate photographer based in Holly, MI, but I serve other areas around Southeast, MI.
I make sure all my equipment is charged the day before my appointments. Also, I make sure that my camera backpack is ready to go for the next day with the essentials: flash, camera, lens, extra batteries, 3D Matterport camera, and my laser for room measurements.
I leave for the day to take all the photos I’m scheduled for, typically stopping at some point to grab lunch from one of my favorite spots or enjoy nice weather at a park.
How did you find WindowStill?
I heard about WindowStill after my good friend and colleague, Nick, accepted a position there in 2019. Whenever he’d talk about what he gets to do at work, my ears would perk up. This connection eventually led to a job offer to work for WindowStill as a real estate photographer!
What do you like to do in your free time when you’re not working?
In addition to real estate photography, I have also been a portrait and wedding photographer for 8 years. When I’m not busy with shoots or photo editing, I love doing anything outdoors. I also enjoy taking care of our property, DIY projects, fishing, playing volleyball, organizing, designing, and binge-watching The Office.
Serving the Lord at our church both as a connect group leader and a vocalist on the worship team is another passion of mine.
What advice would you give to an aspiring photographer/videographer?
You have to realize that if you want to find your own style, you have to stop copying other photographers. Don’t just be the best photographer based on current trends, use the resources available to you.
Take the time to discover your niche so you can be passionate about your work. Take some time to really learn your niche and train your photographic eye. Also, don’t be afraid to ask other professionals in your field for advice or guidance.
Lastly, make sure you’re willing to grow because you’ll learn a ton the longer you take photos.
What do you feel is the most important quality in a photographer?
From photographers I follow on social media to the ones that I know personally, I’ve come to really admire an eye for detail. I feel this quality is so important because a great photo captures an emotion, lighting, and a specific story. These elements are integral to the finished photo.
If a photographer can evoke a certain emotion from their viewers by paying attention to detail, they’ve done an outstanding job.
