Real Estate Photographer Spotlight: Tom Pietryka

This week under the WindowStill Spotlight, we have Tom Pietryka!

Tom is one of our awesome photographers from the Greater Pittsburgh Area! He shared his interests with us as well as a rundown of what his day typically looks like.

Here’s what this Pittsburgh photographer had to say…

What is your role at WindowStill and what does a typical day look like for you?

I am a real estate photographer. A typical day would be me going from house to house taking photos, uploading them by the end of the day so we can get them edited and to clients by the next day.

What do you like to do in your free time when you’re not working?

A lot of the time I end up doing more photography. I have friends in a band and I love going to their shows and shooting pictures of them.

When I’m not listening to live music, I’m often listening to recorded music in my free time. I’m also a bit of a gamer, and I like to hike when the weather cooperates.

What advice would you give to an aspiring photographer/videographer and why?

For photographers: learn on film!

Nothing teaches you the fundamentals as clearly as shooting film on a manual camera, and film forces you to learn to make every shot count – which still matters in the digital world.

For videographers, I would say that the most important thing is to find like-minded people. Video projects are usually a team effort, even if it’s just you and an actor or presenter.

I gained all of my experience by diving into any video projects that presented themselves to me, from music videos to independent films, and I learned a lot very quickly from the people around me.

What do you feel is the most important quality for a photographer/ videographer and why?

I think the most important thing is to be able to balance technical knowledge with creative thinking. Know your equipment and know the science of imaging intimately. Then, you can push that part to the back of your mind and just think about what you want to do creatively.
