Real Estate Photographer Spotlight: Jaxx Leapheart

This week under the WindowStill Spotlight, we have Jaxx Leapheart!

Jaxx is one of our talented photographers based in Midland, MI, offering coverage in Midland, Saginaw, Bay City, and Northern Michigan. She is also willing to travel up to two hours to the south. She shared what her daily routine looks like and a piece of advice she’d give to new photographers.

What is your role at WindowStill and what does a day of work typically look like for you?

A photographer’s typical day at Windowstill is far from typical. The only consistent aspect is the 7 am text message I receive. The night before, I meticulously prepare for my assignments. I check my calendar and dashboard, ensuring everything is in order. I charge my camera batteries, inspect my drone batteries, and allocate some time for editing.

The following day, I wake up to the 7 am text message and immediately start preparing my equipment. I meticulously organize my batteries and memory cards, ensuring everything is ready for the shoot. I strive to leave at least half an hour early to ensure I’m punctual. During my drive to the location, I often listen to audiobooks or music to set the mood.

When I arrive at my appointment, I promptly unpack my equipment, including my tripod. If the property is vacant, I enter the house and begin the process of turning on lights and opening windows. I methodically work through the house, usually starting at the front door. If the property has occupants, I respectfully knock on the door and ask about the need to remove my shoes.

I systematically photograph the main floor, then proceed to the upstairs, basement, and exterior, both in the back and front of the property. If there’s a floor plan to capture, I make sure to include that as well. Typically, I save drone photography for the last part of the session. After completing the shoot, I turn off all the lights, adjust the blinds, and ensure I have all my equipment in order before heading back to my vehicle. I lock up, return the keys, and begin my journey home.

Back at my workspace, I aim to have the photos uploaded around 5 pm when the platform I use is less busy. I upload the photos and make sure to check them off on the dashboard, marking the assignment as completed. This marks the conclusion of a day in the life of a Windowstill photographer.

What do you like to do in your free time when you’re not working?

I love taking pictures, but that’s not the only thing I like. I also enjoy listening to music and audiobooks!

Apart from my photography work, I also do marketing, social media, and fundraising for a non-profit child welfare group as a second job. Working in this job keeps me very busy, especially as we get ready for our annual big event in November.

What advice would you give to someone that’s new to your field and why?

A crucial piece of advice is to maintain a checklist for your tasks. Start by setting everything out the night before your assignment. Double-check in the morning to ensure nothing is overlooked. Lastly, just before leaving the property, do a final check to guarantee you have everything you need. An important detail not to forget is to securely return the keys to the lockbox. Best advice!

What do you feel is the most important quality for someone in your field and why?

To succeed in your endeavors, what you need is a healthy dose of boldness and confidence. Keep in mind that you’ll be visiting various locations and interacting with diverse individuals. All it takes is a warm, welcoming smile and engaging conversation, and you’re more than capable of handling any situation. So, believe in yourself and your abilities, because you’ve got this!
