00:00:00:15 –> 00:00:03:17
Taylor: Welcome to the Brad and Taylor show. Today, we have Alexis Sprankle!
00:00:04:09 –> 00:00:15:05
Brad: You’re listening to the Brad and Taylor Show, a podcast that inspires entrepreneurs to pursue their passions. We’re sitting down with some of the best to learn how they got started and some lessons they learned along the way.
00:00:15:05 –> 00:00:16:09
Taylor: Hey Alexis, how are you doing?
00:00:17:06 –> 00:00:18:23
Alexis: I’m good. I’m very well.
00:00:19:06 –> 00:00:22:25
Brad: Awesome. I like that. Well, let’s get the show started. Tell us a little bit about you. What do you do?
00:00:23:26 –> 00:00:40:00
Alexis: So I’m Alexis Sprinkle. I’m an aunt, a dog mom, and I’m a Michigan realtor. I work in the Metro Detroit area, Wayne County, and I live in Farmington Hills.
00:00:40:05 –> 00:00:43:16
Brad: I like it. I like it. So when you were younger, is this what you had planned for your future?
00:00:45:15 –> 00:00:57:10
Alexis: Well, initially I wanted to be a lawyer, but I mean, here I am a real estate agent, but I feel like it comes to play with my negotiation skills all wrapped in one.
00:00:57:19 –> 00:01:03:04
Brad: Oh yeah. Yeah, for sure. So did you go to school for it? When did the transition change?
00:01:04:14 –> 00:01:21:23
Alexis: Well, into real estate, I actually went to take my prereqs at Schoolcraft for a few years. I always knew I wanted to be a real estate agent. I just wasn’t necessarily ready to make that jump. I got my license in December of 2019.
00:01:22:18 –> 00:01:26:05
Taylor: What was the turning point for you when you’re like, okay, I’m going to just go for it. I’m going to do it.
00:01:27:08 –> 00:01:44:16
Alexis: It came about because of a conversation my boyfriend and I had. We were just talking about how we were ready to level up our lives and start getting serious. So we started putting our plans into play and that was one of the first things I had on the list.
00:01:45:15 –> 00:01:52:16
Brad: Well, nice job. Yeah, that works. I like it. So it’s been almost two years now. Hasn’t it?
00:01:52:16 –> 00:01:54:17
Alexis: Yes. We’re coming up on my two-year anniversary.
00:01:54:18 –> 00:01:59:13
Brad: Oh yeah. How did your first year go? I know COVID kind of helped you in the middle of that.
00:02:00:28 –> 00:02:17:14
Alexis: It was definitely hard because we couldn’t show houses or work for a few months, but I feel like I also used it as a learning period. As soon as we could, I got right back out there and it was still a very successful year, very successful.
00:02:17:14 –> 00:02:19:00
Brad: That’s awesome!
00:02:19:00 –> 00:02:21:01
Taylor: Did you start out on a team or were you solo?
00:02:21:23 –> 00:02:34:09
Alexis: Yeah, solo. I actually just joined a team at the end of my first year and I’m really enjoying it. I like the accountability and the motivation that comes with it.
00:02:34:10 –> 00:02:39:08
Brad: Yeah. Definitely helps out a lot. What is a piece of advice that you got at the beginning that kind of stuck with you along the way?
00:02:40:15 –> 00:02:58:28
Alexis: No one’s gonna do it for you. Just get it done yourself. You’re the one that has to take charge, especially in real estate. You’re the only one that’s going to drive your business. I feel like I took that and ran with it. It’s fun being your own boss.
Brad: Oh yeah, for sure.
00:03:01:26 –> 00:03:04:24
Taylor: What is the worst property you’ve been to over the last couple of years?
00:03:06:08 –> 00:03:57:02
Alexis: It was definitely this property in Dearborn Heights. It was on Ruder Street. I remember it very vividly because of the condition. I believe it was a hoarder home at one point, finally cleaned it up, it was super dirty. When we went upstairs, there was a hole about this size in the roof where water was just pouring in. When it rained, there was like a gallon, like a 30-gallon bucket just catching the water. So, yeah, that was pretty intense. On the bright side of that is I did end up finding a buyer for the property and they bought it. It was in a pretty rough condition and they completely remodeled it. Now it has custom kitchen cabinets and it’s such a beautiful family home. So that was really great.
00:03:57:19 –> 00:04:03:20
Taylor: Oh, that’s awesome. Have you been able to stay in touch with that home as it’s been flipped and everything?
00:04:03:29 –> 00:04:11:02
Alexis: Yeah. My clients are so great. He actually calls me every few months, he calls me on FaceTime to actually show me the home.
00:04:11:24 –> 00:04:11:28
Taylor: Oh that’s exciting.
00:04:13:01 –> 00:04:13:22
Alexis: It’s lovely.
00:04:15:00 –> 00:04:21:02
Taylor: So you just joined a team recently. Do you have any goals going forward for the rest of this year and into the next one?
00:04:22:02 –> 00:04:33:03
Alexis: So far I’ve doubled my income every year in real estate. So of course, if I could do that for the third year, that’d be a beautiful, beautiful thing.
00:04:34:10 –> 00:04:48:16
Brad: That’ll be awesome. Hey, can’t complain there. That’s a good goal though. It’s definitely doable now that you have the team now, it kind of helps you out. All the things that you struggle with now, the team is there to help you out.
00:04:49:09 –> 00:04:51:28
Alexis: Definitely helpful having people on your side that’s for sure.
00:04:52:24 –> 00:05:01:01
Taylor: Yeah. What is your favorite way to market right now? I know with COVID, everyone’s been doing more video stuff. Have you dived into that or?
00:05:01:26 –> 00:05:23:22
Alexis: Yeah, I’m working on it. Going on live makes me pretty nervous and recording myself, but I’m putting myself out here by doing a podcast. It makes me super nervous, but I’m working on it and I do really love social media. So I’ve been trying to utilize that a lot and I’ve gained a few clients from both sides, buyers and sellers. It’s been huge for me.
00:05:24:20 –> 00:05:34:24
Taylor: That’s awesome. You’re not alone with that though. Brad and I were talking about this not too long ago. We wouldn’t have been on here. There’s no way a year ago. We were too nervous.
00:05:35:21 –> 00:05:40:28
Alexis: Yeah. I was definitely anxious all morning. I was like, okay, like, let’s get it going.
00:05:42:25 –> 00:05:43:12
Brad: It’s awesome.
00:05:43:29 –> 00:05:49:07
Taylor: If you could start over with everything that you’ve learned in the last couple of years, what is one thing that you would do differently?
00:05:51:05 –> 00:06:09:26
Alexis: That’s really hard. I mean, as far as real estate goes, I feel like everything that I’ve done and learned in the process was meant to be. If there’s one thing I could do differently, as far as that goes, I would probably buy my real estate class on Groupon and save a few hundred dollars.
00:06:10:23 –> 00:06:11:09
Brad: I like it.
00:06:12:20 –> 00:06:20:10
Alexis: I help a lot of real estate agents to transition into getting their license and getting into the industry. So I always recommend it because I was like, just do that cheaper.
00:06:21:01 –> 00:06:28:24
Brad: That’s awesome. Who knew you got to get your real estate class on Groupon?
00:06:29:14 –> 00:06:37:12
Alexis: Right. When I saw that and then I compared prices to what I paid for my class to what you could have paid. I was like, oh wow. Okay.
Taylor: That’s funny.
00:06:39:00 –> 00:06:41:23
Brad: That’s crazy. That’s awesome.
00:06:42:13 –> 00:06:45:14
Taylor: Do you have any business books that you’ve read that you could recommend to anybody?
00:06:46:18 –> 00:07:07:29
Alexis: All right. So definitely, The Most Powerful Woman in the Room Is You, that was amazing. It was recommended to me by my broker, Trish Dork. It really helped me to just be a very confident businesswoman. I’m a very confident person in general, but in the business aspect, it helped a lot.
00:07:09:04 –> 00:07:24:08
Taylor: That’s awesome. I have one more question for you today. It’s not on the list that we sent. You have to go over.
Alexis: Okay.
Taylor: It’s a random one. Are you ready for it?
Alexis: I’m ready.
Taylor: Okay. Do you think a hot dog is a sandwich?
00:07:25:13 –> 00:07:27:00
Alexis: I’ve never thought about that.
00:07:29:06 –> 00:07:31:10
Taylor: Go either way.
00:07:33:03 –> 00:07:33:22
Alexis: I don’t know.
00:07:34:23 –> 00:07:35:19
Taylor: I don’t know the answer.
00:07:36:17 –> 00:07:41:04
Alexis: I’m going to go with it in its own hot dog category.
00:07:43:10 –> 00:07:46:00
Brad: Oh, I like it. I like it. Well, Hey, thanks for coming out and sharing your story with us today.
00:07:46:24 –> 00:07:50:14
Alexis: Yeah, of course. I appreciate you guys having me. It was very enjoyable.
00:07:50:29 –> 00:07:51:09
Brad: Awesome.
