Getting Your Home Ready For Real Estate Photos
Getting your home ready for your real estate photo shoot? You’re off to a good start!
In fact, about 97% of homebuyers begin their search online and as visual creatures, we need photographs.
Thus, the best way to start when working on your listings is to have a collection of exceptional professional real estate photos. I highly doubt you’d be intrigued enough to pause on poorly taken photos while scrolling through Facebook. All the more on Zillow…
Plus, homebuyers want to visualize themselves and their lives in your home, which they won’t be able to do with all the clutter on the counter, family portraits hanging, or moving boxes by the entryway.

Remove Personal Items
Step 1: Depersonlize.
I know how much your child’s artwork means to you, and I’m sure they’re proud of it too, but I think it’s time to get them off the fridge door. Your home may feature a stainless steel refrigerator and the buyers might not be able to notice that with everything that’s displayed on the door.
Other personal items you might miss include:
- Family portraits
- School Calendars
- Graduation Plaques
- Pet Toys
Make the Beds
Add ’em throw pillows too if you can!
This is a no-brainer that is commonly overlooked, particularly in guest rooms. For a cleaner and more harmonious aesthetic, arrange each bed with matching linens, covers, and pillows. Use bedding that completely covers the bed and is suitably sized for the mattress.
Maximize the Light
Let there be light!
Make sure every light is on (and that every bulb is working) before your photographer arrives. Replace them if necessary, and leave all window treatments open. Real estate photos of homes taken with plenty of natural light add more depth and character.
Clear the Kitchen Counter
Less is more.
The kitchen is the heart of the home and is where many homebuyers focus on. Make sure to remove any clutter and just leave a couple of stylish items on the counter like a flower vase or a bowl of fruit.
Don’t forget to hide all the dirty dishes in the dishwasher as well as garbage cans and recycling bins!
Pull Out Cars off the Driveway
Having cars in the driveway during real estate photos is never a good idea. Always remove any cars, trucks, RVs, and trailers from the driveway and front of the house. It also gives you a chance to show off the home’s exterior as well as the driveway and garage.
Have a Deep Clean
Deep cleaning your home is an extra mile worth taking.
You may either do it yourself if you have the time and energy, or you can contact a professional cleaning service to get it done quickly. Those dirty counters may not be visible to the naked eye, but thanks to technological developments, the camera absolutely captures them. And you wouldn’t want to put a dusty house on the market.
