Real Estate Photographer Spotlight: Eric Turley

This week under the WindowStill Spotlight, we have Eric Turley!

Eric is one of our awesome photographers from Colorado, covering areas from Fort Collins to Castle Rock and everywhere in between. He shared how his daily routine look like and a piece of advice he’d give to new photographers.

Keep reading to see what he had to say…

What is your role at WindowStill and what does a day of work typically look like for you?

I work as a photographer at Windowstill, and a typical day for me includes prepping and packing my camera equipment the night before a photo shoot, and double-checking all the notes and details for the job before I leave. I also ensure that I allot a fair amount of time traveling depending on the location of the property.

When I arrive, I would introduce myself to the agent and/or homeowner. I prefer asking them to prepare the inside of the house while I shoot exterior photos of the house, as this saves time and allows them to prepare things for photos if they haven’t yet.

From there, I try to find a balance between quality and efficiency as I’m always looking for ways of achieving quality results in the shortest amount of time possible. As the faster we complete sessions, the more shoots we can get done in a day.

After that, I go over the photos again before leaving the property to ensure that I have all I need. I’d back up my photos to my hard drive and delete any that I don’t need. Then I check the images on my computer and make notes on any modifications that the editors need to do, and then I send the photos as soon as possible to get them to the customer. After that, it’s on to the next shot!

What do you like to do in your free time when you’re not working?

In my spare time, I love going camping, swimming, and kayaking whenever possible. I’m also a filmmaker, photographer, and videographer, so I enjoy making short films with my friends whenever I get the chance.

What advice would you give to someone that’s new to your field and why?

Be patient and persistent; if you believe in the marketing process and listen to what Brooke says, she will never steer you wrong; she is really smart and helped me greatly when I first started out. Meridith is also a fantastic resource and can teach you a lot, so make sure to ask her any questions you have. This company wants you to succeed, so don’t be afraid to ask for help; they are always eager to help.

As with any new business, it can be challenging at first, but as Jason from the drone training in Remote Pilot 101 often says, “repetition is the mother of skill,” so if you simply keep at it and pay attention to the training, it will become second nature to you.

Additionally, you should contact other Windowstill employees in your area because we’re all on the same team, so if someone goes out of town for vacation, you want them to know that they can rely on you to cover their appointments and, in turn, you can rely on them to do the same for them, plus all of the coworkers I’ve contacted have been very helpful and friendly.

What do you feel is the most important quality for someone in your field and why?

Tenacity is the most important quality that you’ll need for this job. You must get numb to rejection as it will serve you well in all aspects of life, particularly in sales. Never take it personally if marketing does not create jobs right away because it is a numbers game; if you stick to the process, it will work; it’s just a matter of patience and persistence.

If one lead fails, brush it off, learn from it, and go on to the next. The interesting part is that sometimes a person you contacted months ago can call you out of the blue and want to work with you, so even something that doesn’t work out right away may pay off later. It all comes down to sowing those seeds and watching what blooms, as well as cultivating the relationships you’ve previously established.
