Real Estate Photographer Spotlight: Karen Sarno

This week under the WindowStill Spotlight, we have Karen Sarno!

Karen is one of our awesome in North Carolina, covering the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill triangle areas. She talked about what she loved doing in her free time and an advice she’d give to new photographers.

Here’s what she had to say…

What is your role at WindowStill and what does a day of work typically look like for you?

I am a real estate photographer at WindowStill, and my typical workday begins around 7:30 am. After getting my two boys ready for school and having breakfast, I check my schedule over coffee to see where my next shoot will be. I ensure my camera bag is packed with extra batteries and all necessary equipment for the shoot.

Upon arriving at the location, I inform the agent of my presence and inquire about any specific shots they may need. During the shoot, I focus on capturing the property in a way that simulates a walkthrough experience. I pay attention to interesting angles that showcase optimal lighting, highlighting the seamless flow from one room to the next.

Once the shoot is complete, I conduct a final shot count to ensure I’ve captured everything and inform the agent that the session is finished. Upon returning home, I promptly upload all the photos, ensuring that the editing team at WindowStill has ample time to work their magic. I appreciate the well-organized workflow at WindowStill and enjoy being part of the process. Additionally, I’m gearing up to obtain my drone license, adding another dimension to my role after the holidays.

What do you like to do in your free time when you’re not working?

In my free time, I enjoy exploring new coffee spots in the area. When our family can be together, we love going on nature hikes and exploring Raleigh’s diverse playgrounds. The parks in this area are exceptionally beautiful, and we take advantage of the mild North Carolina weather to spend as much time outdoors as possible.

What advice would you give to someone that’s new to your field and why?

For someone new to my field, I’d advise not hesitating to explore different types of photography. I’ve delved into various areas, from fine art and newborn photography to portraits, weddings, and more. Each niche offers a unique set of skills and insights. Embrace the learning process; just like when you started with your camera, improvement takes time and practice.

Don’t shy away from asking questions and being open about your learning journey. The photography community is friendly and supportive. In my experience with WindowStill, the team has been exceptional. From shooting training to personalized marketing meetings, the atmosphere is geared towards your success. Embrace the opportunity to learn, be curious, and enjoy the journey.

What do you feel is the most important quality for someone in your field and why?

The most crucial quality in my field is being open and outgoing. While it might push some out of their comfort zones to interact with many agents and agencies, being friendly and building client relationships is key to success.
