Real Estate Photographer Spotlight: Michelle Cornejo

This week under the WindowStill Spotlight, we have Michelle Cornejo!

Michelle is one of our awesome photographers in Florida, covering St Petersburg, Venice, Sarasota, Parrish, Riverview, Tampa, and more. She talked about what she loved doing in her free time and an advice she’d give to new photographers.

Here’s what she had to say…

What is your role at WindowStill and what does a day of work typically look like for you?

As a real estate photographer for WindowStill, I capture stunning images of properties, primarily focusing on new construction and model homes for Homes by West Bay, my main client. In addition to this role, I also manage my own photography business.

Each day begins with a list of homes provided by the marketing department at Homes by West Bay. I have the flexibility to set my own schedule, often organizing shoots by area to maximize efficiency. I’m a firm believer in balancing exceptional results with a streamlined workflow.

Working in the field is an exciting experience—I get to explore and photograph beautifully designed, brand-new homes. Capturing their unique features and elegance is not only rewarding but also a lot of fun!

What do you like to do in your free time when you’re not working?

When I’m not shooting or editing photos, I make the most of my free time by exploring a variety of hobbies and activities that keep me active and inspired. I have a passion for gardening, where I can relax while nurturing plants and creating a vibrant outdoor space. Paddleboarding is another favorite of mine, as it allows me to enjoy the calmness of the water while staying physically active. I also love hiking and biking, which give me the chance to connect with nature and explore new trails or scenic areas.

Beyond outdoor activities, I’m an avid reader and enjoy diving into books that expand my perspective or transport me to different worlds. Traveling is another big part of my life—I’m always on the lookout for the next adventure, whether it’s exploring a new city, discovering hidden gems, or simply soaking in the culture and beauty of a new destination. These activities not only help me recharge but also inspire me creatively, bringing fresh energy and ideas to my work.

What advice would you give to someone that’s new to your field and why?

Photography is a competitive field with a wide range of talent and experience levels. While I hold an MFA in Photography and have over two decades of experience, many photographers enter the profession without formal education or are just starting out. For those new to the field, my advice is to invest in your skills and knowledge early on.

Consider taking a class or workshop led by an expert to deeply explore photography as both a craft and a technical discipline. Focus on mastering key fundamentals like camera controls, exposure, composition, and lighting—these are the building blocks of great photography. Joining a photo walk with a professional can also be incredibly valuable, as it allows you to ask questions and learn practical tips in real time.

If you have the chance, take a darkroom class to experience the analog process that laid the foundation for modern photography. It’s a fascinating way to understand the art form’s roots and develop a deeper appreciation for the medium.

While online resources like YouTube can be helpful, there’s no substitute for real, hands-on experience. Immersing yourself in practical learning opportunities will not only refine your skills but also build your confidence as you grow in this dynamic field.

What do you feel is the most important quality for someone in your field and why?

Dedication is, without a doubt, the most important quality for anyone pursuing a career in photography. Mastering photography requires patience and time, as it is a highly technical craft that demands a deep understanding of equipment, lighting, composition, and post-processing. This journey isn’t something you can rush—it takes consistent effort and a commitment to continuous learning.

In addition to the technical challenges, succeeding as a professional photographer also requires perseverance. The field is highly competitive, and building a sustainable career involves not just honing your skills but also developing a strong work ethic and the resilience to navigate challenges. Dedication is what drives you to refine your craft, stand out in the industry, and ultimately turn your passion into a livelihood.
